Yoga during pregnancy

TOR Spa Retreat would like to thank Trying-to-conceive.com for this guest blog.

Yoga is not just a great way to keep or get fit for people of all physical abilities. For many, yoga is a way of life – one that provides mental as well as physical harmony. What’s more, yoga is extremely flexible (mind the pun), can be adapted to your particular needs and can be practiced almost anywhere. For pregnant women, yoga is an obvious choice.

If you have a prenatal yoga class in your area, you will have the chance to practice yoga under the watchful eye of an experienced instructor. And bonding with other women who are expecting a baby is a nice added bonus. But if you can’t or don’t want to attend a class, the internet or yoga books can help you find yoga poses that are great for pregnant women too. Just like there are yoga poses that increase fertility, there are also positions that increase blood circulation to the uterus, and those that alleviate unpleasant pregnancy signs like lower back pain, and even morning sickness and vomiting.

Taking care of your physical health gives you more energy and helps you prepare for childbirth. With a specialized yoga program, it is possible to work on those muscles that you will use when you go into labor. Some women even use yoga during labor to help them cope with the pain of contractions, and to relax in between them.

Any prenatal exercise is beneficial, and of course walking, swimming, or jogging can also relieve stress and make you feel better. But yoga is unique in that meditation plays a central role. That does not mean you have to be a new-age type person to enjoy yoga. I can assure you, from personal experience, that yoga is also suitable for the cynical among us. After all, who doesn’t need some time to ourselves, to focus on improving our bodies and our minds? And that is especially true if you are expecting a baby!
